Frequently Asked Questions

What is GridRank?

GridRank is a grid-based puzzle platform. It allows you to play various types of grid-based puzzles including: Sudoku, Calcudoku, and Killer Sudoku

What is solo mode?

In solo mode you are playing against the world. You solve a puzzle get ranked in various ways, including globally, in your country, in your age group, and in your gender.

What is duel mode?

In duel mode you are playing against another player's solution. You may get challenged to a duel by a friend or you can find your own duel to play. While you attempt to solve the puzzle you see the other player's progress.

What are tournaments?

A tournament is a group of puzzles that must be solved before the tournament ends. A tournament can last days, weeks or months. The puzzles might all be the same type or a variety of different types. While you play you see your provisional ranking with the final rankings determined at the end.

What is mirror mode?

In mirror mode you are playing against your younger self. Mirror mode become available once you have been playing GridRank for 6 months. Then you will be challenged to replay puzzles you have played previously to see if you can beat your previous time.

How does ranking work?

Your rank on a puzzle is determined by the time it takes you to solve the puzzle. Once you start a puzzle the clock starts and it is tracked on the game server. You cannot pause the clock (closing the browser or leaving the game does not stop the clock). Once you submit the correct solution your time is calculated by getting the total clock time. Then we add any penalty time you received because of hints you requested. To make certain that players are not penalized for playing at peak times we also keep a running total of all the processing time (time the game server spends processing your moves) and we deduct that from your clock time to get the final time. Times are reported in 1000th of a second. If two players manage to get the exact same time, then we also consider the number of moves made in the ranking, with the player who solved the the puzzle with fewer moves ranking higher.

What if I cannot solve a puzzle?

Once you start a puzzle you have two choices: solve it or abandon it. Anyone can solve any puzzle by using hints. But if you do not want to finish a puzzle you can also abandon it. Once you abandon a puzzle you will not see it again, except in mirror mode. If you abandon a puzzle in a tournament you do not get another chance to solve it.

How do hints work?

Any time you are playing a puzzle you can request a hint. Unless the puzzle is already solved getting a hint reveals the correct value for a random cell. This may be a cell that previously had the wrong value or was blank. You cannot decide which cell is revealed by a hint. Although there is no limit on the number of hints you take during a game, each comes with a time penalty, currently 30 seconds.

How do tokens work?

Tokens are the in-game currency. They have no value outside of the game. New players receive a starting balance of 20 tokens. It costs 1 token to play a puzzle. If you run out, you get more tokens in a variety of ways. You earn tokens for watching ads, inviting friends to join, by creating new puzzles, or completing other rewarded tasks. Blocks of tokens are also available to be purchased.

Note that purchases and personalized ads are disabled for kids.

Can kids play?

Absolutely. GridRank is available to everyone of any age. When you sign up you provide your birth year. For players under 13 we disable personalized ads and purchases. We also disable rewarded tasks, like taking a polls. However, kids can still earn tokens by watching contextual ads, inviting friends, and creating puzzles.

What about cheating?

Cheating on a puzzle means solving it using something other than your own strategy and logic. If you want to cheat on a puzzle you can. You will not be banned from the game for cheating. However, it is unfair to regular players to put cheaters in the rankings so we use various approaches to try to detect cheating on puzzles. We don't provide details on the cheat detection logic because that just makes it easier to evade. However, the order in which cell values are provided plays a role. Therefore, you will likely be flagged as cheating if you solve puzzles offline, for example using pencil and paper, and then enter the solution online.

If you feel you were falsely flagged for cheating you can contact support.

How does puzzle creation work?

GridRank lets you become a puzzle designer. You can create new puzzles, share them with friends, and get feedback from players around the world. The process works like this. You design a new puzzle and submit it for processing. Depending on the size and complexity of the puzzle it can take some time (hours) to verify that the puzzle is valid and there is only one possible solution. Once the puzzle is accepted it will be added to the puzzle library but is private only to you for 2 weeks. This gives you a chance to share the puzzle with friends. After 2 weeks it becomes available to everyone to play.

When you submit puzzles, you grant GridRank a perpetual license to use them in the game, events, and learning features. See Terms.

What data does GridRank store?

Nickname, country, device UID, language, and optional birth year and gender for rankings. IP addresses are stored temporarily during a session for rate-limiting and then expire. See the Privacy Policy.
